The Top 10 Things to Watch While You Ride Out a Hurricane

BY DANI FAITH LEONARD What would you watch during a hurricane? Would you watch disaster movies? Reality TV marathons? Here are the Top 10 Things to Watch While You Ride Out a Hurricane: #10 - Storm Stories // Storm Stories, a series on the weather channel, never ceases to amaze me. There are plenty of stories about people who, against better judgment and advice, decide to wait out a storm. They get swept out to sea and somehow survive. One crazy man with a blonde mullet claimed that on his journey he ran into sharks and alligators. The catch - there was no evidence and the weather channel still decided to put this on the show. Question of the day - why do these people always have mullets? #9 -If God is Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise // Spike Lee’s new documentary about post-hurricane Katrina New Orleans (5 years later) is currently airing on HBO. It’s not uplifting, but it will make you hope that you would never be treated the same way after a disaster hit you. #8 - Volcano // Different natural disaster, but it’s hard to think of a more laughable film (it’s about a volcano...in LA). The tagline, if I remember correctly, was “The Coast is Toast.” Oh, man. #7 - Titanic // There’s a lot of liquid, there’s a lot of disaster, and Celine Dion will sing you to sleep at the end of the night - It sounds like a late night out at the bar. #6 - Waterworld // Go to sleep and dream that this could be what your town will look like the next day - everything might be covered in water and Kevin Costner may show up with long, bad-ass hair and lovely earrings. #5 - The Day After Tomorrow // It makes the long-term threat of Global Warming way scarier than the short-term threat of a hurricane. And I love the part when the Russian tanker floats through Manhattan. #4 - The Hurricane // Why are boxing movies always so great? The Hurricane, Raging Bull, Cinderella Man and Million Dollar Baby are all awesome. Against the Ropes starring Omar Epps and Meg Ryan...not so much. #3 - Wolfgang Peterson’s remake of the The Poseidon Adventure // It’s not that often that you can experience a disaster within a disaster. #2 - Twister // Awesomely bad dialogue meets a natural disaster more deadly than a hurricane and reminds you that it can always be worse. We have debris! #1 - Marathon of America’s Next Top Model // After watching 10 hours of Tyra Banks talking about herself, you might want to run out into strong winds and be impaled by a tree.
